What is Command Line Interface in .NET

Introduction

In .NET the Command Line Interface is a cross-platform toolchain for creating, building, restoring packages, running, and publishing .NET applications. Command Line Interface in .NET provides a way that is used to interact with the framework and run .NET applications from the command line.

The Command Line Interface in .NET is a text-based interface that allows you to enter commands and parameters to do various tasks. It is also called the command-line user interface, console user interface, and character user interface. And the .NET Command Line Interface (CLI) is included with the .NET SDK.

How it works?

Once a computer system is in the running stage, its CLI opens on a blank screen with a command prompt where you can enter all the commands related to your applications.

Features

  • It has a scripting capability that enables users to write programs that can be run on the system from the command line. And any language that can be compiled into the Common Intermediate Language (CIL) code can be executed on CLI.

  • It enables the users to direct the output of one program to be the input for another program.

  • It performs JIT compilation of CIL code into machine code at runtime, which enhances performance and reduces memory usage

  • This feature of CLI enables the user to recall previous commands.

  • It also provides an exception-handling mechanism which can be used to catch and handle exceptions that occur at runtime.
