World Wide Web (WWW)

The World Wide Web commonly referred to as the Web, is a network of linked websites and publications that can be accessed via the Internet. These websites offer text pages, photographs, audio, video, and more. Users can use their devices, such as PCs, laptops, and mobile phones, to access information from anywhere in the globe over the internet.

Since then, the Web has expanded into a massive network that anybody with an Internet connection may access for information, entertainment, business, and conversation.


History of the World Wide Web (WWW)

It is a project that Tim Berner Lee started in 1989 to improve collaboration between researchers at CERN. The World Wide Web Consortium (WWWC) is an organization that was created to advance web development. Tim Berners-Lee, also known as the father of the Internet, is in charge of this organization.  


Tim Berners was employed at CERN, which is home to more than 1700 researchers from more than 100 nations. It was necessary for these researchers to have good communication in order to exchange data because they operate at national research centers and universities in their home countries and spend a small amount of time at CERN.

  • The World Wide Web is distributed, open-source, and cross-platform. 
  • It has billions of users since it is dynamic. WWW is still developing. 
  • With the help of the World Wide Web Multimedia integration—text, photos, audio, and video—is possible. 
  • The WWW provides applets, scripts, and forms to facilitate interactivity. 
  • It offers  Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure-based secure communication. 
  • Web resources are uniquely identified by their URLs. 
  • With the use of search engines and hyperlinks, the WWW provides simple navigation and searchability. 
  • It is compliant with World Wide Web Consortium (WWWC) web standards.

1. Web Browser

A web browser is a piece of application software used to browse the internet. It acts as a conduit between the client and the server, requesting web pages and other services from the server. It functions as a compiler to produce HTML, which is needed for webpage creation. The browser loads an HTML web page containing text, links, graphics, style sheets, and JavaScript functions whenever we conduct an online search.


2. Web Server

A web server is a piece of hardware or software that responds to client requests sent over the World Wide Web using protocols such as Hypertext Transfer Protocol. A web server's primary function is to display website content by processing, storing, and sending webpages to users. Web servers handle SMTP and FTP in addition to HTTP, which are used for email, file transfers, and storage.


3. Web Pages

A website is a digital document that can be seen by anybody with an internet connection and a web browser that is connected to the World Wide Web. Any kind of information, including text, color, pictures, animations, films, music, etc., can be included.


4. URL

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locater. An Internet resource can be found using a Uniform Resource Locator, which is a special identification. These resources include HTML pages, CSS documents, images, and more. There are required and optional components that make up a URL.


5. HTTPS

HTTPS stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure .HTTP is the main protocol used to transfer data between a web browser and a website. HTTPS is the secure version of HTTP. To improve data transfer security, HTTPS is encrypted. This is especially crucial when customers send sensitive information, including when they enter into an email service, bank account, or health insurance company.


6. Hyperlink

A hyperlink is an electronic connection that allows users to go directly from one clearly designated location in a hypertext or hypermedia document to another inside the same or separate document.


7. HTML

The common markup language for documents intended to be viewed in a web browser is called HTML, or Hyper Text Markup Language. Technologies like CSS and scripting languages like JavaScript can help with it. Using elements or tags, HTML describes the structure of online pages and uses a web browser to display the content of these pages.


8. XHTML

XHTML stands for Extensible Hypertext Markup Language. A accepting HTML-specific parser is required for the XHTML family of XML markup languages, which mimic or enhance variations of the popular Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) Flexible foundation. restricted subset of XML that requires conventional XML parsers to interpret.

The advantages of WWW are:

  • Large-scale data transfers are its main benefit. 
  • WWW offers a rapid and engaging means of communication. 


The disadvantages of WWW 

Following are the disadvantages of WWW:

  • Sorting through vital information is difficult. 
  • The available data is not subject to quality control. 
  • The quality of the data on the WWW is beyond our control.
